Edmonton Society-Ukrainian Women's Organization of Alberta

OUR ORGANIZATION

The first women's groups in Canada began to be created under the Ukrainian Riflemen's Communities (USG) as early as 1930. On March 23, 1933, at a meeting of the UNO in Edmonton, it was decided to transform the "Women's Section of the USG" into
''Women's Society named after Olga Basarab at UNO''. This day is considered the founding day of our organization. In 1934, at the first all-Canadian meeting of Women's Societies, it was decided to unite into one independent organization under
under the name ''Organization of Ukrainian Women of Canada (OUK) named after Olga Basarab'' with branches across Canada. The first National Executive Committee was also elected there. OUK is a full-fledged part of the Ukrainian National Union (UNO).

TASK

The Edmonton branch unites active, purposeful, and persistent women who set themselves the goal of creating a corner of the Motherland - Ukraine in Canada.

The goal of the Ukrainian Women's Union is to preserve the Ukrainian language and culture, customs and traditions for future generations of Ukrainians and to attract as many proactive women as possible to our organization. To this end, the members of the Ukrainian Women's Union organize exhibitions and concerts, organize conferences, seminars, meetings with interesting people, and prepare meaningful reports at various cultural events.
The UAC had a kindergarten. The women of the UAC actively supported the opening of the “Native School” in Edmonton, where children could learn and improve their Ukrainian language. In 1992, the UAC established the Ukrainian Children’s Theater Studio “Dzherelo,” which still exists today.

In 2014, the Ukrainian musical ensemble ''Ruta'' was founded at the OUK based on the adult participants of ''Dzherel'', which can be joined by those who want to sing and learn Ukrainian songs. Also, since 2017, the OUK has had an Archive and a collection of artifacts of Ukrainian fraternal organizations at the UNO, where artifacts from different historical periods are presented, a collection of embroidered Ukrainian clothing, towels, Easter eggs from different regions of Ukraine, ceramics, books, photos - a collection of the history of the OUK and the BO.

The UAC also helps disabled children and orphans in Ukraine, collaborates with other Ukrainian women's organizations in Edmonton, and participates in various joint projects, such as Heroine Day, Heritage Days, and others.
